Detects when a user or service principal is assigned the 'Owner' or 'Contributor' role at the Subscription scope in Azure. This activity is often associated with privilege escalation and persistent access techniques.
Detects indicators of the DirtyClone (CVE-2026-43503) Linux kernel local privilege escalation exploit. The rule identifies the execution or compilation of the PoC binary, the specific su invocation used for shell spawning by the exploit, and subsequent post-exploitation actions including modifying sensitive files (/etc/passwd, /etc/sudoers) and creating new local accounts with sudo privileges.
Detects when a single user principal name (UPN) performs two or more Azure AD admin role assignments within an hour. This could indicate an attempt to escalate privileges or establish persistence by assigning administrative roles to multiple accounts or to the same account multiple times.
This rule detects suspicious activity related to the assignment of application roles. Specifically, it identifies when a single user principal name (UPN) performs 10 or more successful 'Add app role assignment' operations within a one-hour window. This could indicate an attacker rapidly granting themselves or other entities access to multiple applications or resources.
Detects signs of persistence via suspicious scheduled task creation or local user creation/group escalation, and C2 activity involving a specific IP address or unauthorized connections to the Telegram bot API.
Detects the creation of a local user account (EventID 4720) or the addition of a user to sensitive local groups such as Administrators or Remote Desktop Users (EventID 4732). This behavior is common in persistence mechanisms used by threat actors such as BQTLock ransomware and GOLD ENCOUNTER.
Detects the use of Windows Package Manager (winget) or Configuration Remoting Server processes to execute account management commands such as adding users or modifying group memberships via net.exe or PowerShell. This behavior is indicative of privilege escalation or persistence attempts using legitimate administrative tools.
Detects instances where a user or service principal is assigned to high-privilege roles (e.g., Global Administrator, Owner) without utilizing the Microsoft Entra Privileged Identity Management (PIM) service. This is indicated by the absence of 'PIM' in the LoggedByService field for a successful 'Add member to role' operation, which could signify an attempt to bypass established access controls and gain unauthorized elevated persistence.
Detects high frequency administrative modifications, such as user creation/deletion, password resets, or group membership changes, performed by service accounts associated with Azure AD Connect or Microsoft Entra Connect. This behavior may indicate account compromise where a service principal is being abused to perform bulk identity management operations.
Detects successful assignment of highly privileged roles (Global Administrator, Privileged Role Administrator, Security Administrator, Exchange Administrator) to a user in Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD). This is often a sign of privilege escalation or persistence establishment by an attacker.
Detects when an application or service principal is assigned an app role containing sensitive permissions in Azure AD/Microsoft Entra ID. Such assignments can grant an application elevated access to mail, directory, or user management, which is a common tactic for persistence and privilege escalation in cloud environments.
This rule detects the creation of a new local user account followed by its addition to the local administrators group within a 10-minute timeframe. It monitors process command lines for 'net.exe' or 'powershell.exe' creating users and then adding them to the 'administrators' group, excluding domain operations.
Detects instances where a guest user or an external account (identified by the #EXT# suffix) performs an operation to add a new member to a Microsoft 365 Group. This behavior can be indicative of a guest account being compromised or misused to escalate privileges or gain unauthorized access by modifying group memberships.
Detects Azure Privileged Identity Management (PIM) role activations that occur outside of standard business hours (before 07:00 or after 19:00 UTC, or on weekends) or involve high-privilege roles (e.g., Global Administrator, Privileged Role Administrator, Security Administrator).
Detects signs of persistence via account manipulation consistent with the Obsidian Sandstorm actor. The rule monitors for unauthorized password resets on administrative accounts (Event IDs 4723, 4724), the addition of users to highly privileged security groups (Event IDs 4728, 4732), and modifications to user account attributes (Event ID 4738) that indicate changes in account control flags.
Detects the addition of users to specific high-value or sensitive groups in Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD), which could indicate potential unauthorized privilege escalation or persistence attempts by an attacker.
This rule detects HTTP POST requests to the MyBB admin panel (admin/index.php) that attempt to create or modify a user account with membership in the Administrator group (gid=4). The detection requires the presence of an administrator session cookie (adminsid), indicating an attempt by a lower-privileged administrative account to escalate privileges by assigning administrative roles to users.
Detects instances where a user account is created or modified (e.g., added to a local admin group) shortly after a network logon event (Logon Type 3 or 10). This behavioral correlation is highly indicative of lateral movement followed by local privilege escalation or persistence establishment.
This rule monitors for new user account creation (Event ID 4720) that is either performed by a known suspicious process name or initiated by a non-standard provisioning account. It additionally correlates these creation events with subsequent additions of the new account to the local Administrators group (Event ID 4732) to flag potential privilege escalation attempts.
Detects the creation of new members in the 'Domain Admins' or 'Enterprise Admins' groups by monitoring Windows Security Event ID 4728. This event indicates that a member was added to a security-enabled global group. The rule specifically looks for additions to highly privileged administrative groups, which could indicate unauthorized privilege escalation or persistence.
Detects the creation of local user accounts or adding users to privileged groups triggered by ConfigurationRemotingServer.exe. This activity is indicative of potential misuse of the WinGet DSC (Desired State Configuration) capability to maintain persistence or escalate privileges on a Windows host, a technique observed in the DSCourier malware.
