The following analytic detects the execution of Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) commands used for network interface discovery on a Windows system. Specifically, it identifies commands such as “wmic nic” that retrieve detailed information about the network adapters installed on the device. While these commands are commonly used by IT administrators for legitimate network inventory and diagnostics, they can also be leveraged by malicious actors for reconnaissance, enabling them to map network configurations and identify potential targets. Monitoring WMIC network interface queries allows security teams to detect suspicious or unauthorized enumeration activities, supporting early threat identification and response.
This query is designed to inventory Wi-Fi-connected devices and their network configurations, identify public IP addresses in use, and geolocate those IPs to detect anomalies (e.g., a device showing a public IP from an unexpected country). It also provides visibility into network adapter details, including vendor and status.
Detects the execution of suspicious commands commonly used for reconnaissance or networking, where the parent process command indicates it was triggered by an npm 'postinstall' script. This behavior is associated with the XORIndex loader used in the "Contagious Interview" campaign.

KQL Query from file: CVE-2024-38063 CVSS 9.8 Prioritization
The analytic detects the use of PowerShell's Invoke-RestMethod cmdlet to collect geolocation data from ipinfo.io or IP address information from api.ipify.org. This behavior leverages PowerShell Script Block Logging to identify scripts that gather external IP information and potential geolocation data. This activity is significant as it may indicate reconnaissance efforts, where threat actors are attempting to determine the geographical location or network details of a compromised system. While some legitimate software may use these services, this pattern is commonly observed in malware and post-exploitation toolkits like those used by Water Gamayun threat actors.
Detects DNS server discovery via LDAP query requests from uncommon applications
Detects system discovery activity carried out by Pikabot, such as incl. network, user info and domain groups.
The malware Pikabot has been seen to use this technique as part of its C2-botnet registration with a short collection time frame (less than 1 minute).

Use this query to find reconnaissance and beaconing activities after code injection occurs.
Reconnaissance commands are consistent with the current version of Qakbot and occur automatically to exfiltrate system information. This data, once exfiltrated, will be used to prioritize human operated actions.

The attacker might use LOLBAS nltest.exe for discovery of domain controllers, domain trusts, parent domain and the current user permissions.

This query was originally published in the threat analytics report, MailSniper Exchange attack tool.
MailSniper is a tool that targets Microsoft Exchange Server. The core function is to connect to Exchange Server and search through emails. In support of this, it can perform reconnaissance, collection, exfiltration, and credential theft. MailSniper is used both by red teams running penetration tests, and by malicious actors.
Microsoft Defender Security Center may record the following alerts during and after an attack:
1. Global mail search on Exchange using MailSniper
2. Exchange mailbox or mail folder search using MailSniper
3. Enumeration of Active Directory usernames using MailSniper
4. Enumeration of the Exchange GAL using MailSniper
5. Access to Exchange inboxes using MailSniper
6. Password spraying using MailSniper
7. Enumeration of domains and user accounts using MailSniper
The following query detects activity commonly associated with attacks run with MailSniper.

Detects execution of "Get-NetFirewallRule" or "Show-NetFirewallRule" to enumerate the local firewall rules on a host.
Detects external IP address lookups by non-browser processes via services such as "api.ipify.org". This could be indicative of potential post compromise internet test activity.
This query uncovers seen IPAddressV4 network subnets
Use this query to locate injected processes launching discovery activity. Qakbot has been observed leading to ransomware in numerous instances.
