'Identifies anomolies in signin events based on the volume of signin events over time. Use this to identify suspicious authentication patterns such as spikes in activity or out of hours events.

Detect suspicious Kerberos TGT requests.
Once an attacer obtains a computer certificate by abusing Active Directory Certificate Services in combination with PetitPotam, the next step would be to leverage the certificate for malicious purposes.
One way of doing this is to request a Kerberos Ticket Granting Ticket using a tool like Rubeus.
This request will generate a 4768 event with some unusual fields depending on the environment.
This analytic will require tuning, we recommend filtering Account_Name to the Domain Controller computer accounts.

The analytic detects network share access requests indicative of the PetitPotam attack (CVE-2021-36942). It leverages Windows Event Code 5145, which logs attempts to access network share objects. This detection is significant as PetitPotam can coerce authentication from domain controllers, potentially leading to unauthorized access. If confirmed malicious, this activity could allow attackers to escalate privileges or move laterally within the network, posing a severe security risk. Ensure Event Code 5145 is enabled via Group Policy to utilize this analytic effectively.
The analytic detects a suspicious Kerberos Ticket Granting Ticket (TGT) request, identified by Event Code 4768. This detection leverages Windows Security Event Logs to identify TGT requests with unusual fields, specifically a non-empty CertThumbprint, which may indicate the use of tools like Rubeus following the exploitation of CVE-2021-36942 (PetitPotam). This activity is significant as it can signal an attacker leveraging a compromised certificate to request Kerberos tickets, potentially leading to unauthorized access. If confirmed malicious, this could allow attackers to escalate privileges and persist within the environment, posing a severe security risk.
This rule detects attempts to coerce authentication using the PetitPotam technique. It specifically looks for Windows Security Event ID 5145, which indicates a network share access, where the ShareName starts with '\\' and ends with '\IPC$', the RelativeTargetName is 'lsarpc', and the SubjectUserName is 'ANONYMOUS LOGON'. This combination of events is indicative of a PetitPotam attack attempting to force a domain controller to authenticate to a malicious server.
Detects Microsoft Outlook attempting to initiate a connection to a WebDAV or SMB share by querying specific registry keys. This behavior is indicative of an exploitation attempt related to CVE-2023-23397, where an attacker could force Outlook to connect to a malicious share and leak NTLM hashes.
Detects 'svchost.exe' spawning 'rundll32.exe' with command arguments indicating the use of 'davclnt.dll,DavSetCookie' and a remote IP address. This activity is suspicious as it can be an indicator of data exfiltration, execution of code hosted on a WebDAV server, or exploitation related to CVE-2023-23397, particularly for NTLM hash theft.
Detects the execution of various scripting interpreters or command-line tools via a LNK file accessed from a WebDAV share. This technique is often used by adversaries to bypass security controls and execute malicious code, leveraging the `DavWWWRoot` path to indicate WebDAV access. The parent process is expected to be `explorer.exe`, suggesting user interaction.
Detects the execution of the "net use" command to mount a WebDAV server and then immediately execute some content from it. This technique has been observed in malicious LNK files, often used for initial access or execution of payloads from remote shares.
Detects when an internet-hosted WebDAV share is mounted using the `net.exe` or `net1.exe` utility. This activity can be indicative of an adversary attempting to establish remote access or exfiltrate data by mounting a remote share.
Detect PetitPotam coerced authentication activity.
