Detects potential exploitation of Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) by attackers who abuse app role permissions to backdoor federated domains and escalate to Global Administrator using forged SAML tokens
KQL Query from file: Monitoring Cross-Tenant Abuse by Threat Actors
KQL Query from file: Entra Cross-Tenant Activity Monitoring
KQL Query from file: Detecting GOLDEN SAML Attack
'This hunting query will alert on any Impossible travel activity in correlation with mailbox permission tampering followed by account being added to a PIM managed privileged group.
Ensure this impossible travel incident with increase of privileges is legitimate in your environment.'

"This query searches for any action type with high frequency that involves adding, modifying, or removing something in cloud app policies. It sees where the properties are modified such that the old value and new value are different for every property except for minor property changes such as Display Name."
This query will find when federation trust settings are changed for a domain or when the domain is changed from managed to federated authentication. Results will relate to when a new Active Directory Federated Service (ADFS) TrustedRealm object, such as a signing certificate, is added.
Modification to domain federation settings should be rare, so confirm the added or modified target domain/URL is legitimate administrative behavior.
The actor, Nobelium, was observed modifying domain trust settings to subvert existing mechanisms and cause the domain to accept authorization tokens signed with actor-owned certificates. See Customer Guidance on Recent Nation-State Cyber Attacks.
To understand why an authorized user may update settings for a federated domain in Office 365, Azure, or Intune, see Update or repair the settings of a federated domain in Office 365, Azure, or Intune.
For details on security realms that accept security tokens, see the ADFS Proxy Protocol (MS-ADFSPP) specification: 3.2.5.1.2.4 Security Realm Data.
For further information on AuditLogs, please see Microsoft Entra ID audit activity reference.
This query is inspired by an Azure Sentinal detection.

'This query looks at the last 14 days for "Consent to application" operation by a user/app which could potentially mean unauthorized access. Additional context is added from AuditLogs based on CorrleationId from the same account that performed the action.'
'This detection uses Windows security events to detect suspicious access attempts to the registry key values and sub-keys of Microsoft Entra ID Health service agents (e.g AD FS).
Information from AD Health service agents can be used to potentially abuse some of the features provided by those services in the cloud (e.g. Federation).
This detection requires an access control entry (ACE) on the system access control list (SACL) of the following securable object: HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ADHealthAgent.
Make sure you set the SACL to propagate to its sub-keys. You can find more information in here https://github.com/OTRF/Set-AuditRule/blob/master/rules/registry/aad_connect_health_service_agent.yml

'This detection uses Security events from the "AD FS Auditing" provider to detect suspicious object identifiers (OIDs) as part EventID 501 and specifically part of the Enhanced Key Usage attributes.
This query checks to see if you have any new OIDs in the last hour that have not been seen in the previous day. New OIDs should be validated and OIDs that are very long, as indicated
by the OID_Length field, could also be an indicator of malicious activity.
In order to use this query you need to enable AD FS auditing on the AD FS Server.

The following analytic identifies modifications to Okta Identity Provider (IDP) lifecycle events, including creation, activation, deactivation, and deletion of IDP configurations. It uses OktaIm2 logs ingested via the Splunk Add-on for Okta Identity Cloud. Monitoring these events is crucial for maintaining the integrity and security of authentication mechanisms. Unauthorized or anomalous changes could indicate potential security breaches or misconfigurations. If confirmed malicious, attackers could manipulate authentication processes, potentially gaining unauthorized access or disrupting identity management systems.
The following analytic detects the addition of a new custom domain within an Azure Active Directory (AD) tenant. It leverages Azure AD AuditLogs to identify successful "Add unverified domain" operations. This activity is significant as it may indicate an adversary attempting to establish persistence by setting up identity federation backdoors, allowing them to impersonate users and bypass authentication mechanisms. If confirmed malicious, this could enable attackers to gain unauthorized access, escalate privileges, and maintain long-term access to the Azure AD environment, posing a severe security risk.
The following analytic identifies when cross-tenant access/synchronization policies are changed in an Azure tenant. Adversaries have been observed altering victim cross-tenant policies as a method of lateral movement or maintaining persistent access to compromised environments. These policies should be considered sensitive and monitored for changes and/or loose configuration.
The following analytic identifies the addition of a new federated domain in an Office 365 environment. This behavior is detected by analyzing Office 365 management activity logs, specifically filtering for Workload=Exchange and Operation="Add-FederatedDomain". The addition of a new federated domain is significant as it may indicate unauthorized changes or potential compromises. If confirmed malicious, attackers could establish a backdoor, bypass security measures, or exfiltrate data, leading to data breaches and unauthorized access to sensitive information. Immediate investigation is required to review the details of the added domain and any concurrent suspicious activities.
Detects the execution of AADInternals PowerShell cmdlets. AADInternals is a tool used for administering Azure AD and Office 365, which can be abused by threat actors for various attacks including reconnaissance, credential access, and impact within Azure AD or Office 365 environments. The rule specifically looks for the unique "-AADInt" string prefix in cmdlet names.
This rule detects the creation or activation of new user accounts in Okta with specific display names, such as 'svc_network_backup', which were identified as indicators of compromise during the Okta Support System 2023 breach. It aims to flag suspicious account activity that could indicate unauthorized access or persistence by an attacker. The rule can be improved by filtering out legitimate usernames if 'svc_network_backup' is a known and authorized account in the environment.
Detects the addition of a new Federated Domain in Microsoft Exchange. This event can be indicative of credential abuse or the establishment of a backdoor via federated identities, potentially in the context of a Golden SAML attack.
