Detects access to paid threat intelligence or dark web data platforms
This rule detects DNS queries for domains ending with '.onion', which are typically associated with the Tor network and the dark web. Such queries indicate potential attempts to access dark web resources, which could be a policy violation or an indicator of malicious activity.
This rule detects network connections to known threat intelligence vendor portals. It specifically looks for HTTP traffic where the host header matches one of the specified domains: intel471.com, ke-la.com, recordedfuture.com, or flashpoint.io. This could indicate an analyst or automated system accessing threat intelligence resources.
This rule detects HTTP requests to known threat intelligence portals associated with dark web monitoring. It specifically looks for hostnames containing 'intel471', 'kela.io', 'recordedfuture', or 'flashpoint'. This could indicate an analyst or system accessing threat intelligence, or potentially an adversary performing reconnaissance.
This rule detects access to known dark web credential markets by inspecting HTTP host headers for specific domain patterns. It triggers an alert if a client on the home network attempts to connect to 'genesis.market', 'russianmarket', or '2easy.shop'. This indicates potential reconnaissance or direct access to platforms where stolen credentials are traded.
KQL Query
Intent:
- Use MTP capability to look for insider threat potential risk indicators
- Indicators would then serve as the building block for insider threat risk modeling in subsequent tools
Definition of Insider Threat:
"The potential for an individual who has or had authorized access to an organization's assets to use their access, either maliciously or unintentionally, to act in a way that could negatively affect the organization."
This collection of queries describes the different indicators that could be used to model and look for patterns suggesting an increased risk of an individual becoming a potential insider threat.
Note: no single indicator should be used as a lone determinant of insider threat activity, but should be part of an overall program to understand the increased risk to your organization's critical assets. This in turn is used to feed an investigation by a formal insider threat program to look at the context associated with the whole person to understand the implication of a set of indicators.
