Executive Summary
XHOPELESS v1.0 is a highly destructive wiper malware attributed to the actor "zdn2pwn." Unlike typical ransomware, this threat is designed for total system destruction with no recovery path. It employs a ten-phase execution chain that targets every level of the operating system and underlying hardware, including UEFI/BIOS firmware, disk partitions (GPT), and the Windows Registry.
The malware features aggressive anti-analysis capabilities, including Anti-VM checks and the hijacking of common administrative tools like Task Manager and Regedit via Image File Execution Options (IFEO). By targeting OEM-specific firmware update tools (e.g., AFUWIN, H2OFFT) and clearing all Windows Event Logs, it ensures that forensic investigation and system restoration are nearly impossible. Its use of a registry-based infection marker allows it to resume destruction immediately upon any successful reboot, effectively creating a permanent bricking loop.
