Detects Windows web/PHP worker processes (php.exe, php-cgi.exe,
apache.exe, httpd.exe, lsphp.exe, nginx.exe) spawning unexpected command shells
or download utilities. Exploitation of CVE-2026-109618 / CVE-2026-109619 in core
PHP grants unauthenticated RCE; the child process is the observable artifact since
the memory corruption leaves no trace in the PHP logs. mod_php deployments are
the highest-risk configuration.

Detects malicious file hashes, suspicious process executions involving Node.js/Bun running setup scripts, schtasks/powershell persistence monitoring tasks, and connections to known domains/RPC endpoints associated with threat activity. The query ran without errors in a live tenant.
Detects cmd.exe launching curl.exe with TLS verification disabled, redirect following, an output file, and forced hostname-to-IP resolution, or the PowerShell Invoke-WebRequest with a certificate-check bypass switch, often associated with malicious trojan droppers.
Detects instances where Microsoft Teams (ms-teams.exe, Teams.exe) or its associated WebView2 process spawns a command or script interpreter (such as PowerShell, Cmd, Mshta, Wscript, Cscript) with suspicious download-and-execute arguments, which is commonly associated with ClickFix social engineering attacks or similar initial access tactics.
Detects reconnaissance commands (whoami, systeminfo) and PowerShell execution spawned as children of remote-access tools (such as AnyDesk, ScreenConnect, TeamViewer/QuickAssist variants, etc.), followed shortly by an outbound network connection to a .top domain from the same device.
Detects behavior where PowerShell or pwsh executes msiexec.exe to silently install an MSI file located in a temporary directory with a GUID-prefixed filename, optionally following a recent download from a remote URL.
Detects execution of a specific PowerShell remediation script using execution policy bypass, or generic PowerShell activity importing certificates into the LocalMachine\Disallowed store outside of known administrator processes and accounts.
Detects PowerShell processes combining local loopback listener terms (such as HttpListener or TcpListener) and authentication or web request cmdlets referencing 127.0.0.1 or localhost, correlated with local network loopback connections.
Detects command-line execution of script interpreters (PowerShell, CMD, MSHTA) spawned via Windows Explorer containing download primitives and URLs, followed by immediate external network connections.
Detects a sequence where PowerShell downloads an .msi file from Azure Blob storage (blob.core.windows.net), followed by msiexec.exe spawning PowerShell on the same device within 30 minutes.
Detects access to Chrome or Chromium-based browser Local State files (which contain encrypted keys) by a non-browser process that correlates temporally with a PowerShell process exhibiting ClickFix-style staging characteristics (hidden window, bypass execution policy, and containing a URL).
Detects attempts to disable or tamper with Windows Defender settings, services, or registry keys via command-line execution (such as reg.exe, PowerShell, or sc.exe) or direct registry modifications.
Detects the execution of the ROMULUS staging script via PowerShell script block logging (Event ID 4104). The rule identifies specific indicators including the use of environment variable '__ST', '$MyInvocation.MyCommand.Path', dynamic code reconstruction via '[scriptblock]::Create', and a high comma count exceeding 200.
Detects PowerShell execution spawning 7zr.exe to extract password-protected 7z archives using overwrite and password switches within a specified timeframe, or referencing specific malicious IOC file names and domains.
Detects a sequence where PowerShell downloads an .msi installer file from Azure Blob Storage, followed closely by msiexec.exe spawning a PowerShell process on the same device.
Detects instances where a browser process (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave) is observed on a device shortly before an explorer.exe-initiated PowerShell, PWSH, or CMD process executes a command containing download strings or script execution patterns (such as DownloadString, Invoke-WebRequest, IEX, or encoded commands) referencing URLs.
Detects PowerShell registering a logon scheduled task that executes a Trays.exe binary from an AppData Yandex Trays path with the -tray argument, or a scheduled task specifically named 'Microsoft apdate'. Associated with the RareWolf AnyDesk dropper batch script.
Detects the addition of Microsoft Defender exclusions targeting the C:\Windows directory or SystemHealth\Update paths via PowerShell commands (Add-MpPreference/Set-MpPreference) or direct Registry modifications, which may indicate an attempt to evade security detection.
MSI-backed loader execution chain
Cortex XDR
This query uses the process ID of each child to match the parent process's PID, then reconstructs the chain back to explorer.exe. It also checks for the encoded PowerShell, silent MSI installation, and embedded MSI execution behaviours described in the source article.
Important caveats
- Causality scope: This finds matching process events within a shared causality ID; it does not establish that each process directly launched the next.
- Explorer root: The root process may not share the same causality ID in every telemetry scenario. If this join removes otherwise valid results, investigate the root separately.
- Strict matching: Requiring every stage will miss partial chains and variants with different command-line arguments. Consider separate alerts for the encoded PowerShell and silent MSI behaviours.
- Validation: Confirm the field names, join syntax, and causality-ID population against your tenant before deploying this as a production detection.

Detects PowerShell using System.Net.WebClient DownloadFile or related commands to fetch tool dependencies (such as 7z, MSTSCLib, ffmpeg) from GitHub repositories associated with the 'websalat' naming convention, indicative of Salat Stealer or similar tool-loading activity.
Detects a PowerShell download-and-execute command referencing specific typosquatted lure domains (e.g., choclatey.org, massgravel.net) combined with follow-up script activity writing into a fake SystemHealth\Update directory.
