Detects recreation of svchost32/Cloud Sync Service persistence (registry Run key, Windows service, or scheduled task) within 15 minutes of removal, indicative of CornFlake backdoor re-installation following remediation.
This rule detects two potentially malicious behaviors: 1) The creation or installation of a Windows service using the 'Cloudflared' executable, which can be leveraged for unauthorized tunneling or persistence. 2) The execution of an executable named 'svchost.exe' located within a user's Documents folder, which is a common indicator of file masquerading to evade detection.
Detects redundant persistence mechanisms associated with the CornFlake RAT by identifying the creation of Windows services, registry run keys, and scheduled tasks that reference a binary named svchost32.exe located outside of the standard C:\Windows\System32 directory, often masquerading as a 'Cloud Sync Service'.
Detects the creation of a Windows service named 'svchost32' with a display name of 'Cloud Sync Service' via administrative command-line utilities like sc.exe, PowerShell, or cmd.exe. This activity is a known persistence mechanism for the CornFlake RAT, which masquerades as a legitimate system process to evade detection.
KQL Query from file: Cloudflared Persistence & svchost.exe Masquerading Post-N-central CVE-2026-18577
Detects mass file renaming (ransomware-style encryption behavior) within 30 minutes after execution of Phantom Mantis EDR-killer tooling, indicating endpoint defenses were pinned immediately before ransomware deployment.
Detects a full defense-evasion sequence against the drvsvc kernel service and its drv.sys driver: stop, poll, delete, and re-drop occurring within a short time window.
This rule detects the creation of a Windows service named 'Cloud Sync Service' using command-line tools like 'sc.exe' or 'New-Service', or via direct service event monitoring. This behavior is often associated with malware persistence mechanisms that use misleading names to blend in with legitimate software services.
Detects the DriverKiller BYOVD loader and its embedded vulnerable TG Soft VirIT Agent driver (CVE-2017-17472) by requiring the leftover PDB path artifact together with a known SHA-256 hash match, rather than either indicator alone, to avoid matching legitimate VirIT Agent installations or unrelated files containing only a subset of the indicators
Detects a user-mode caller sending IOCTL 0x2220E0 to a loaded kernel driver, triggering an attempted system reset via the 8042 keyboard controller.
KQL Query from file: CornFlake RAT dropper file creation at %APPDATA%\svchost32\svchost32.exe
Detects process termination with exit code 99 consistent with the VirIT Agent driver abused by DriverKiller, tightly correlated with presence of the DriverKiller service / Viragtlt device on the host.
Correlates installation of the G13 killer driver (drvsvc service, drv.sys/anticheatG13.sys image) with abnormal termination of known security-product processes shortly after, consistent with kernel-initiated memory corruption.
Detects IOCTL requests to the Phantom Mantis G12/G13 killer driver used for kernel-mode arbitrary file operations (query/read/write/rename), scoped to unsigned callers targeting security-product install directories.
Detects the observable effect of G13's driver entry-point patch capability: repeated Service Control Manager STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED failures starting the same targeted kernel driver.
Detects creation of WindowsData*.log files directly under the KnownDllPath directory (C:\Windows\System32) by an unsigned process, consistent with Phantom Mantis G13 kernel-assisted EDR killer driver activity.
Detects G13 kernel driver IOCTL calls used to enumerate and unregister security-vendor minifilter drivers, restricted to unsigned callers targeting known AV/EDR minifilter altitude ranges.
Detects the creation of a Windows service using 'sc.exe' with names or command-line indicators associated with legitimate Windows update services, a technique commonly used by the TOKYOCORE malware for persistence.
Detects the creation of a malicious Windows service named 'WinUpdateSvc' with the display name 'Windows Update Service Helper' using sc.exe. This activity is a documented persistence mechanism for the TOKYOCORE ransomware, which executes the binary 'fsociety.exe' with SYSTEM privileges.
This query helps to identify service creation events regardless of the tool/method used for service creation (even if the threat actors use the Windows API directly, without leaving any command line traces).
Detects evidence of the TELEPUZ malware establishing persistence by installing a Windows service named 'CipherAllocator' or 'PilotmasterMast'. The rule monitors for the installation of these specific services via Windows Event ID 7045, process command line execution, and direct registry key modifications.
