Find the execution of PowerShell Version 2.0, eather to discover legacy scripts using version 2 or to find attackers trying to hide from script logging and AMSI.
Query for SmartScreen URL blocks, where the user has decided to run the malware nontheless.
An additional optional filter is applied to query only for cases where Microsoft Edge has downloaded a file shortly after the ignored block.
Read more about SmartScreen here: https://docs.microsoft.com/windows/security/threat-protection/windows-defender-smartscreen/windows-defender-smartscreen-overview.
Data availability: These events are available only on Windows 10 version 1703 and onwards.

ISO Image Mounted
Sigma
This rule detects when an ISO image is mounted on a Windows endpoint. It specifically looks for Event ID 4663 (An attempt was made to access an object) where the ObjectServer is 'Security', ObjectType is 'File', and the ObjectName starts with '\Device\CdRom'. The rule filters out common legitimate files found on mounted ISOs, such as 'autorun.ico', 'setup.exe', and 'setup64.exe', to reduce false positives. This activity can be indicative of an adversary using ISO images to bypass Mark-of-the-Web (MOTW) protections and deliver malicious payloads.
Detects the creation of an ISO file in the Outlook temporary folder or in the AppData temporary folder. This activity is typical of Qakbot TTPs observed from late July 2022, often associated with bypassing Mark-of-the-Web controls.
This rule detects the use of the PowerShell cmdlet 'Mount-DiskImage' with the '-ImagePath' parameter. Adversaries may use this technique to mount disk image files (like ISO or VHD) containing malicious payloads. This method can bypass Mark-of-the-Web (MOTW) controls, as files extracted or accessed from a mounted image may not inherit the MOTW, allowing them to execute without typical security warnings or protections.
This rule detects suspicious PowerShell activity involving the mounting of a disk image (like ISO or VHD) and then immediately invoking an item from that mounted image. This technique is often used by adversaries to bypass Mark-of-the-Web (MOTW) protections, as files extracted or run from mounted disk images may not inherit the MOTW flag, allowing malicious payloads to execute without security warnings.
Detects the creation of Virtual Hard Disk (.vhd or .vhdx) files by common browser processes. This activity can be indicative of malware delivery, as adversaries may use VHD files to encapsulate payloads and bypass security controls, particularly Mark-of-the-Web (MOTW) protections.
This rule detects the use of the PowerShell cmdlet 'Unblock-File' with the '-Path' parameter. This cmdlet is used to remove the Zone.Identifier alternate data stream from a file, which marks it as downloaded from the internet. Adversaries may use this to bypass security warnings and execution restrictions associated with files downloaded from untrusted sources, often as part of a defense evasion strategy.
