Detects processes performing unusually high volumes of file operations across numerous directories within a short period. This behavior is characteristic of ransomware encryption engines, file destruction tools, and wiper malware. The rule is designed to identify VECT-style high-speed encryption activity before widespread impact occurs.
This rule detects potential credential abuse of service principals or applications by identifying an unusual number of activities from a single service principal or application across multiple distinct IP addresses within a one-hour window. It specifically monitors sign-in logs for applications like 'Azure CLI', 'GitHub', or 'CustomApp' where the user type is 'ServicePrincipal' or 'Application'. A threshold of more than 10 activities and more than 2 distinct IP addresses within an hour triggers an alert.
This rule detects the issuance of OAuth tokens or OAuth consent events within cloud applications. It specifically looks for these events where the client application is not 'Microsoft Teams' or 'Azure CLI'. The rule summarizes the number of grants and distinct users for each client application and token ID over hourly intervals. This can help identify potentially unauthorized or suspicious OAuth application consents.
This rule detects unusual network beaconing activity from processes. It identifies processes that make more than 50 network connections within a 15-minute window to distinct remote IP addresses and ports, excluding common legitimate processes like svchost.exe, chrome.exe, msedge.exe, and explorer.exe. The rule then enriches this information with the last seen time of the process.
Detects the creation of a file on a server system by common network utilities (curl, ftp, powershell, winscp, certutil) within a 5-minute window of a network connection to common ports (21, 22, 80, 443). This could indicate ingress tool transfer or data exfiltration attempts.
Detects use of screencapture -x, which suppresses the camera shutter sound and has been observed in ClickFix-delivered malware.
This rule detects the creation or modification of user accounts on Windows systems by monitoring Security Event IDs 4741 (A security-enabled local group was created) and 4742 (A computer account was changed). It summarizes the count of such changes per hour by the subject user name, which can help identify unusual or excessive account management activities.
This rule detects when a single computer executes 5 or more process termination commands (taskkill or Stop-Process) within a one-hour window. This behavior can be indicative of an adversary attempting to disrupt system operations or evade defenses by stopping security tools or critical services.
Detects failed attempts to change the system audit policy. This could indicate an adversary attempting to disable or modify security monitoring to evade detection.
This rule detects a high volume of group membership changes (additions or removals) by a single user within a one-hour window. Event IDs 4728 (A member was added to a security-enabled global group), 4729 (A member was removed from a security-enabled global group), and 4730 (A member was removed from a security-enabled universal group) are monitored. A count of 5 or more such events by the same user within an hour is flagged as suspicious, potentially indicating malicious account manipulation or privilege escalation attempts.
