Detects obfuscated PowerShell execution via mshta.exe, specifically looking for patterns indicative of VBScript execution within mshta that creates an object and runs a command, often used for defense evasion.
This rule detects attempts to access specific registry keys associated with the Windows Local Security Authority (LSA) to calculate the SysKey. SysKey is a critical encryption key used to protect sensitive system information, including password hashes. Adversaries may attempt to extract the SysKey to decrypt credentials or other sensitive data stored in the LSA, often as part of credential dumping activities. The rule specifically looks for Security Event IDs 4656 (A handle to an object was requested) or 4663 (An attempt was made to access an object) where the ObjectType is 'key' and the ObjectName ends with 'lsa\JD', 'lsa\GBG', 'lsa\Skew1', or 'lsa\Data'. These registry paths are known locations where SysKey components are stored.
Detects remote service activity by monitoring access to the 'svcctl' named pipe via the IPC$ share. This activity is indicative of an attacker attempting to interact with services on a remote system, often as part of lateral movement or persistence efforts.
This rule detects the creation of a new Windows service where the service's ImagePath contains 'powershell' or 'pwsh'. This indicates that a PowerShell script is being used as the executable for a newly installed service, which is a common technique for persistence or privilege escalation by adversaries.
Detects the installation and execution of the RemCom service, which is often used for remote administration and can be leveraged by adversaries for lateral movement or persistence.
Detects the unexpected termination of important Windows services, specifically targeting 'Message Queuing' (MSMQ) service. This could indicate an attempt to disrupt critical system functions or evade detection by stopping services that might be monitoring activity or providing essential communication channels.
Detects the installation of a new Windows service where the service executable's image path contains suspicious locations such as 'AppData' directories or remote IP addresses like '127.0.0.1' or 'localhost'. This can indicate an attempt at persistence or privilege escalation by adversaries installing malicious services in non-standard locations.
Detects actions taken by Windows Defender malware detection engines, indicating that malware or potentially unwanted software has been found, suspicious behavior has been detected, or an action has been performed to protect the system.
Detects the deletion of Exchange PowerShell cmdlet history logs, which may indicate an attempt by an adversary to destroy forensic evidence and evade detection. This action can hinder incident response and forensic analysis.
Detects the creation of suspicious web shell files (ASPX, ASP, ASHX) by the IIS worker process (w3wp.exe) in directories commonly associated with Microsoft Exchange or IIS web roots. This activity is indicative of potential exploitation of Exchange vulnerabilities, such as those used in the ProxyShell or ProxyNotShell attacks, to establish persistence via web shells.
