This rule detects a specific UAC bypass technique (UACMe method 39) that leverages .NET Code Profiler and DLL hijacking against mmc.exe. It specifically looks for the creation of a DLL named 'pe386.dll' within a user's temporary AppData directory, which is characteristic of this bypass method.
Detects the creation of Virtual Hard Disk (.vhd or .vhdx) files by common browser processes. This activity can be indicative of malware delivery, as adversaries may use VHD files to encapsulate payloads and bypass security controls, particularly Mark-of-the-Web (MOTW) protections.
Detects signs of the WMI script host process "scrcons.exe" loading scripting DLLs which could indicate WMI ActiveScriptEventConsumers activity. This is a common technique for persistence and privilege escalation.
Detects potential DLL sideloading of DLLs that are known to be abused from suspicious locations. This rule identifies when specific DLLs (coreclr.dll, facesdk.dll, HPCustPartUI.dll, libcef.dll, ZIPDLL.dll) are loaded from unusual or suspicious directories, such as Perflogs, Users\Public, Temporary Internet Files, Windows\Temp, or various user profile subdirectories like Favorites, Favourites, Contacts, and Pictures. This behavior is indicative of an adversary attempting to execute malicious code by tricking a legitimate application into loading a malicious DLL from an unexpected path.
Adversaries may steal data by exfiltrating it over an un-encrypted network protocol other than that of the existing command and control channel. The data may also be sent to an alternate network location from the main command and control server. This rule detects suspicious outbound SMTP connections by looking for connections to common SMTP ports (25, 587, 465, 2525) from processes that are not common mail client applications like Thunderbird or Outlook, or Microsoft Exchange Server processes.
This rule detects the use of the PowerShell cmdlet 'Get-SmbShare', which adversaries may use to discover shared folders and drives on remote systems. This information can be leveraged for data collection or lateral movement within a network.
This rule detects PowerShell commands that use `Get-ChildItem` with `-Recurse` and `-Include` parameters to search for common document and archive file extensions. This behavior is indicative of an adversary attempting to automatically collect sensitive data from a system or network.
This rule detects the use of '.CopyFromScreen' within PowerShell script block text. This API call is commonly used by adversaries to capture screenshots of the desktop, which is a technique for gathering information during an operation. The detection relies on PowerShell Script Block Logging being enabled to capture the script content.
Detects suspicious execution of AgentExecutor.exe, a Microsoft Intune component, when it is used to launch PowerShell scripts with potentially bypassed execution policies or to execute a 'powershell.exe' binary from a specified path. This behavior can be indicative of a Living Off The Land Binary (LOLBIN) abuse.
Detects the execution of Microsoft's bash launcher (bash.exe) with the "-c" flag. This technique can be used by adversaries to bypass defenses and execute Linux or Windows-based binaries indirectly via bash, leveraging the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) environment.
