This rule detects successful non-interactive sign-ins to high-value applications (e.g., Office 365, Azure, Okta) where no multi-factor authentication (MFA) challenge was performed during the current session. Such activity is a strong indicator of session hijacking or token replay attacks, where adversaries reuse stolen session cookies to bypass interactive login requirements and MFA.
Detects the creation of files with potentially executable extensions (e.g., .php, .jsp, .pl, .cgi, .sh, .py) within NetScaler web-accessible directories. This behavior is indicative of an adversary attempting to deploy a web shell for persistence or command execution following a successful exploit of the web application.
Detects non-CLI and non-DevOps utility processes accessing sensitive cloud credential and configuration files, including AWS SSO caches, AWS credentials, kubeconfig, and gcloud configuration files. This behavior is indicative of credential theft or discovery by infostealers attempting to gain unauthorized access to cloud environments.
Detects the use of administrative utilities (psexec.exe, wmic.exe, powershell.exe, cmd.exe) initiating network connections over common remote management ports (135, 139, 445, 3389, 5985, 5986) to internal destinations. This behavior is indicative of lateral movement activity, particularly when initiated from a host that has recently engaged in credential harvesting or infostealer-related activity. The rule excludes common, expected sources to minimize noise.
Detects the creation or modification of Exchange mailbox rules using the New-InboxRule or Set-InboxRule cmdlets that perform automatic forwarding or redirection of email to external, non-trusted domains. This technique is commonly employed during account takeover events to facilitate covert data exfiltration.
Detects the suspicious combination of a file modification within Magento frontend or checkout JavaScript/template directories followed by an outbound network connection initiated by web server processes (e.g., Apache, Nginx, PHP). This pattern is consistent with the injection of a digital skimmer (e.g., Magecart style) and the subsequent exfiltration of stolen payment card data to an attacker-controlled endpoint.
Detects a potential WMI-based persistence mechanism by identifying the sequential execution of mofcomp.exe to compile a MOF file located in a temporary directory, followed by the execution of a VBScript payload using cscript.exe with the /e:VBScript.Encode flag. This pattern is indicative of an attacker attempting to establish persistence via WMI event subscriptions.
Detects host enumeration activities (listing processes, user information, and directory contents) performed by known legitimate binaries (e.g., poedit.exe, curl.exe, vim.exe) shortly after they have executed a suspicious sideloading event. This pattern is characteristic of the NeedyMantis actor performing initial discovery before C2 beaconing.
Detects a suspicious sequence of events characteristic of NeedyMantis's hands-on-keyboard activity. The rule identifies file staging (creation or modification of suspicious DLLs from network shares) followed by remote command execution (via Impacket-like service interaction) and subsequent execution of binaries vulnerable to DLL sideloading.
Correlates an Entra ID MFA/authenticator reset with a new device registration within 30 minutes for the same account. Models the Scattered Spider (UNC3944/Octo Tempest) and CrowdStrike-tracked 'Mutant Spider' helpdesk-vishing playbook, where Mandiant's M-Trends 2026 measured ~40 minutes from vished reset to domain admin.
