This rule detects when a user grants an OAuth application permissions within an Azure AD or Office 365 environment, specifically monitoring for highly sensitive permissions such as 'Mail.Read', 'Files.ReadWrite', 'User.Read.All', or 'offline_access'. The rule cross-references the application ID against a known list to filter out pre-authorized applications and assigns a risk score based on the combination of granted permissions, flagging suspicious, unrecognized applications.
Detects instances of common web browser processes (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.) spawning command-line interpreters or scripting hosts (PowerShell, cmd.exe, mshta.exe, wscript.exe, cscript.exe). This pattern is consistent with ClickFix social engineering attacks, where users are manipulated into copying and executing malicious commands from a fake CAPTCHA or error prompt.
Detects the execution of commands to disable Microsoft Defender (specifically Set-MpPreference or stopping the WinDefend service) within 10 minutes of the first interactive user login on a host. This behavior is indicative of threat actors, such as Akira ransomware affiliates, performing anti-forensics and disabling security controls on newly provisioned or compromised systems.
Detects instances where a user grants an OAuth application permissions for high-privilege scopes such as 'mail.read', 'files.readwrite', or 'offline_access'. This behavior is frequently indicative of OAuth consent phishing campaigns targeting Microsoft Entra ID environments to gain unauthorized access to user data and maintain persistence via stolen access tokens.
Detects frequent execution of common Active Directory enumeration tools (such as BloodHound/SharpHound, AdFind) and suspicious LDAP attribute queries targeting sensitive AD information (e.g., group membership, service principal names). The rule triggers when an individual user performs more than three such operations within the aggregation window.
Detects the hallmark of a ClickFix attack: a user tricked by a fake error message into pasting a PowerShell command into the Run dialog (explorer.exe), which accesses the clipboard.
Detects the creation of scheduled tasks named 'MicrosoftEdgeUpdate' or 'MicrosoftEdge' that execute files located in non-standard directories such as ProgramData or Temp. This is a common technique used by threat actors to achieve persistence while masquerading as legitimate update services.
Detects automated enumeration patterns via the Microsoft Graph API, specifically targeting bulk directory pulls (requests with $top=999) and keyword-based searches for sensitive organizational data (payroll, HR, finance). This rule aggregates activity by user session to identify suspicious volumes and diversity of requests.
This rule detects potentially malicious activity related to browser extensions, specifically targeting configuration file modifications (manifest.json, rules files) or the use of sensitive browser APIs (declarativeNetRequest, updateDynamicRules) that are commonly abused by malicious extensions. It also flags activity that includes keywords associated with affiliate/ad-click fraud platforms within command line arguments of major browsers like Chrome and Edge.
This rule monitors Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) sign-ins for indicators associated with the 'Payroll Pirate' campaign. It identifies non-interactive OAuth/token-based authentication requests originating from residential Internet Service Provider (ISP) ASNs using devices marked as unmanaged. It further elevates risk by detecting impossible travel (same user accessing from multiple IPs in a short window) and the use of specific browser User-Agent strings (Firefox or Axios) characteristic of the threat actor's tooling.
