Detects a sequence of events on Linux hosts involving a remote interactive or network logon from an external IP, followed within 5 minutes by root-level process execution, and subsequently within 2 hours by an outbound SSH connection to a private or known attacker IP. Also includes a separate branch for direct logons from known malicious IPs.
Detects an SSH process establishing local port forwarding to a Unix socket (such as docker.sock) or a path containing a socket, followed shortly after (within 15 minutes) by non-administrative tool access to sensitive files like /etc/shadow or Docker sockets on the same device.
Detects the sequence where a private key file is written to the host followed by the execution of ssh.exe with parameters indicating a reverse port forwarding tunnel (-R), an identity file (-i), and background execution (-N or -f) within a 30-minute window.
Detects a root SSH sign-in from a public IP address or known attacker IP, followed within 30 minutes by a write or modification to the root authorized_keys file on the same device.
Detects potential abuse of Tailscale SSH Unix socket forwarding where the tailscaled daemon touches sensitive files/sockets (such as docker.sock or /etc/shadow) or creates/replaces Unix sockets following an SSH session.
Detects operator synchronization scripts (sync-all.sh, sync-memory.sh, sync-cc-users.sh) spawning SSH, rsync, or scp commands targeting AI-named jump-server accounts (claude, grok, gemini, glm).
Detects potential abuse of Tailscale SSH Unix socket forwarding where the tailscaled daemon touches sensitive files/sockets (such as docker.sock or /etc/shadow) or creates/replaces Unix sockets following an SSH session.
Detects non-root SSH execution performing remote port forwarding (-R) targeting a Unix socket bind on hosts running the tailscaled daemon, excluding known automation tools.
Detects an AWS identity making 10 or more successful EC2 Instance ConnectSendSSHPublicKey API calls within the configured search interval.
EC2 Instance Connect temporarily makes an SSH public key available to an operating-system user on an EC2 instance.
A burst of these calls may indicate automated attempts to establish access or move laterally using compromised AWS credentials.

The following analytic detects SSH connections presenting client banners that do not match known, common SSH client software by leveraging Zeek ssh logs.
Unusual or unknown SSH client banners may indicate custom tooling, offensive frameworks, tunneling utilities, or malware using SSH for command-and-control or lateral movement.

Detects the execution of the 'fanout.sh' utility from the /tmp directory, which subsequently spawns 'sshpass' child processes to perform rapid, non-interactive SSH authentication attempts ('StrictHostKeyChecking=no') against multiple internal hosts within a 10-minute window. This behavior is indicative of automated lateral movement, specifically observed by threat actor UNC6240.
This rule detects outbound network traffic originating from internal assets attempting to establish an SSH connection to a known malicious C2 infrastructure (190.211.124.187). This behavior is indicative of the CARBONATO malware utilizing a reverse SSH tunnel for command-and-control communication.
Detects outbound connections to a known malicious C2 infrastructure associated with the CARBONATO threat actor. The rule identifies both established SSH sessions using the OpenSSH implementation and the initiation of outbound TCP connections on ports dynamically determined by an MD5 hash, which is a known behavior of this actor's C2 communication strategy.
Detects a suspicious sequence where a Python process is spawned by a 'marimo' notebook process, followed immediately by an outbound SSH connection attempt from the same device. This pattern is indicative of automated or scripted lateral movement where a notebook environment is abused as a jump-point for command execution on remote systems.
This rule detects modifications or creation of the SSH 'authorized_keys' file, often used to establish unauthorized persistent access via SSH key-based authentication. It monitors both file system changes and command-line execution patterns involving SSH key injection commands (e.g., echo, cat, redirection) while filtering out known management agent activity.
